Friday 4/18 – Thursday 4/24

Last week I found my 18-year-old nephew researching a paper for school, surfing the Net for info on censorship. “Back in my day,” I heard myself saying, “we had to use reference books and the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature.” Then I began to wonder if the tomes of yore are going the way of the vinyl record. I’m not the only one; today the Harold Washington Library Center’s special collections curator John Chalmers will join Sharon Hogan, librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Paul Elitzik of the Lakeview Press, and antiquarian book dealer Terry Tanner to discuss The Future of the Book in Light of the New Information Technology. The panel will be followed by a Q and A session. It’s from 1 to 4 in the Chicago Authors Room at the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State. It’s free. Call 312-747-4300.

22 TUESDAY Though Tiffany Kim studied at the School of the Art Institute, tonight Columbia College will name the Chicago-based clothing designer of Tiff and Griff Designs 1997’s Fashion Columbia Designer of Excellence. Kim’s pricey designs can be found at Henri Bendel and Bergdorf Goodman. The festivities honoring Kim coincide with Fashion Columbia, a juried exhibition of fashion-related art by students. The exhibit opens at 5 at the Hokin Gallery of Columbia College, 623 S. Wabash. A cocktail reception runs from 6 to 7 at the Chicago Hilton & Towers, 720 S. Michigan, followed by a student-produced runway fashion show, which will include some of Kim’s pieces. The dinner honoring Kim follows at 8. Tickets to the exhibit opening, cocktail reception, and fashion show are $40; $150 will also get you dinner with Kim. The Hokin exhibit, which is otherwise free, runs through April 30. Call 312-663-1124 for tickets; for more information about the exhibit, the number is 312-663-1600, ext. 5650.
